Can Scrivener be open on two or more PC computers at once while writing

Basically… I have a laptop and desktop, and I would like to open my Scrivener project on both at the same time while working for cross reference. Will they coordinate together or does that cause a conflict while both platforms are open? I simply need more real estate and don’t have a 2nd monitor other than my laptop and iPad.

That’s fairly likely to cause a conflict, unfortunately. For that reason, you should see an error message if you try it.

I believe it’s possible to configure an iPad to act as a second monitor. I’m not sure how to do it on a PC, though.

I have not used it, so this is not an endorsement, but this link seems to explain how to use an iPad as a second screen for a PC or Mac:

I was going to recommend Synergy but it doesn’t work for iOS/iPadOS.

Duet. the app allowing you to use your iPad as an extension monitor has a Windows version as well as Mac version.

Worth a try?

Great suggestions all. Giving it a try… Many thanks!

I think there might be situations where you’d want to do this. For instance, if you were writing a horror movie script, and wanted to hear what a real scream of terror sounded like.

With Mac and current os versions, the built in Sidecar works best.

I have tried Duet on mac and win with reasonable success.

I would love to hear more about how to use Scrivener with Sidecar and Duet Display. My MacBook Pro is just a little too old to use Sidecar (but at least it has a great keyboard and plenty of useful ports!), so I’ve been using Duet with it and my iPad Pro. But I haven’t figured out how to use this set up with Scrivener. I don’t know how to make the project stretch across the two screens. It never mattered much before because I had a 24" external display to use for my Scrivener projects and I didn’t need the iPad space, but that display recently bit the dust and I’m trying to see if I can get by just using my iPad and MacBook Pro.

My usual way of drafting a story is to put the source material for each file (that is, each section of the draft) in the Draft in a Document Note for that file, and then write in the body of each file, while referring to (and often pasting material from) the source material in that Document Note, displayed in the Inspector.

I’d be happy to reconsider my workflow though if it would allow me to devote all my MacBook screen space to each draft file while keeping my reference material over on the iPad. I guess for now a workaround would be to add an extra step: after arranging all the source material in the appropriate Document Note, copy and paste that material into a TextEdit document that could live on the iPad, and then just display the appropriate draft file without showing the the Document Note (i.e. closing the Inspector).

This seems so clunky that I’m sure I’m missing something obvious, but I’m happy to display my ignorance if someone can help me figure out how to make this set up work better with Scrivener. Thanks in advance!

PS: I realize this is in the Scrivener for Windows subforum, and I"m using a Mac, but this is where the topic originated. Moderators, feel free to move to the Mac forum if you think best.
