So…that doesn’t sound so bad, but…I cannot save the file anywhere. It says it can’t create a backup because it can’t save in another project’s scriv folder???
First, it is not backed up in another project’s scriv folder. I had moved the file much as I have before when rearranging my files.
So, It doesn’t matter where I try to save it. Same folder, new folder, desktop, USB. And this immediately after the program crashed and it happens whenever I try to open any recent version, saved or current working copy. It is all of the recent updated versions of the file. Any ideas how to get out of this circular error situation I find myself in? There is far too much in the file to rewrite. It contains plotting, research, several verions of the novel and scenes.
I appreciate your help with this. Any help with this. Thank you.
Is this all projects or just one? If just one you could try creating a new project and then using the File > Import > Import Scrivener Project and see if can restore that way.
If all the project look at the options panel > general > warnings and turn on the scrivener event recorder and send to L&L.
Remember when I told you it worked? When I opened Scrivener today it said it couldn’t create backup. Again. So I tried opening a new file to import a previous copy of the file. It cannot create a backup file. I suspect I will need to delete Scrivener and reinstall, buit wondered if you or anyone had any other idea?
That’s the problem. It isn’t. Nothing is set to backup in another project’s folder. I had just created a new folder for it. I didn’t rename any folders, I didn’t combine any folders. I created a new folder, moved the files into the folder Working Projects. I opened, worked in, and saved in that folder for about 2 or 3 weeks. This happened without any changes other than an unexpected program crash.
Sorry for the lengthy request, but at this point you’re going to need to provide specifics.
In Windows Explorer, please enable display of file name extensions during this exercise, so you can see exactly what the file types are.
Does the backup error happen to all of your various Scrivener projects, or just the one? What is the name of the failing project’s project folder? It will be something like MyProject.scriv.
What is the path to the failing project’s project folder? Please provide it exactly. Here’s an example of what I’m looking for:
For the failing project, what are the settings under File > Options > Backup. Particularly, please provide the exact path you’re seeing entered in “Backup location”.
The backup location is still the same (default):
C:\Users\kimpa\AppData\Local\LiteratureAndLatte\Scrivener\Backups
I couldn’t open the file in any way, but when a few others were giving me trouble, I got worried. I created a whole new file branch and copied everything into the new folder/s.
—Files; Icons; Settings; Snapshots; Walking Symbols.scriv—
The other folders giving me trouble were similar, nothing extra or other. Viewing the files/folders with all the details showed nothing unusual. No partial files, no fragments or documents that were either unrelated or different from what is usually there, even when compared to the files that were not having problems. Then I realized that the files giving me difficulty were all in one particular folder branch (‘Fiction in Progress’. I didn’t find anything in that main folder, either, beyond each Scrivener Project Folder.
With the other projects giving me trouble, I decided to move the Scrivener Project folders one by one (individually) into a newly created folder. Moved, not copied. I think the problem was in that main folder because once I did that, there were no more errors. So I deleted the problem folder once everything was moved to the other folder.
Still no idea what caused the problem, but I’m very glad for all the help.
