Can't download dictionaries. Tried everything

Hello. Scrivener won’t let me download any dictionary. All my work is in Portuguese BR. Being unable to spell-check in PT-BR defeats Scrivener’s purpose to me.

I tried everything within m reach, I ran installer as admin, run Scrivener as admin, changed dict folder credentials, took ownership, but nothing works, it shows me a download error, an unknown network-related error and that’s it.

I don’t have any other software problems like hat. Please, help me to overcome this issue.

I’m on Windows 10 Home and Scrivener 3.1.5.1.

Thanks in advance.

Hi A.Cabreira, and welcome to the forum.

We have this Knowledge Base article on installing new dictionaries for Windows users. Is that the process you’re using when you get the error?

If it is, could you post a screenshot of the error message? I’ll increase your trust level so you can post the message.

Seeing its text could help us sort out why the proces isn’t working.

The dictionary download function is going to be trying to fetch files from our main web server (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/). So first I would check and make sure that Scrivener itself can contact that server. There are two things you could try, a simple one would be to run an update check from the Help menu. You should, given the version you are using, get a message about being up to date, not a message about being unable to contact the server. Another test would be to try and import our home page into your binder, with the File ▸ Import ▸ Web Page... menu command.

If nothing is working, then it might just be a temporary routing problem between your physical location and the server’s. If you’re at work, it might be a proxy issue. I have just double-checked (as we did recently perform a website upgrade), and I can download dictionaries (including PT-BR) from my location (Iberia), even over a VPN. If you do have a VPN that might be something to try, route your traffic from another location, and try again.

I said I tried everything, lol. I reset my network, firewall, still nothing worked.
The only thing that worked was installing to another drive/folder!

It wasn’t very scientific, I know, but I was so tired that I had to jump both wagons.
As I rest a little, I’ll reinstall to a different folder in drive C. For now, I’ll work on the text, finally.

I wouldn’t do without your information, thanks so much!
