Can't update Scrivener

When I click on “check for updates” I get this message:
“Scrivener can’t be updated if it’s running from the location it was downloaded to.”
What does this mean? And how can I upgrade?

I guess that if you don’t want to change anything (installed location) in your computer, alternatively you can download the latest version from the website, then install while Scrivener is not running.
(I am not a Mac user.)

This error is most commonly a result of running the software from your Downloads folder. You should drag it to the /Applications folder to properly install it (and if it is already there, try dragging it out and back in, using Finder. It can struggle sometimes if you use other methods of moving things around).
