Can't use the editor

HI,
I’m new to Scrivener. I bought a new laptop and had to extract my Scrivener software and project to an external hard drive. Then I imported it to my new laptop.
The problem is that when I click on a chapter of my novel, it appears in a small screen to the right of the binder. However, the editor is not available. So I can’t do anything but type text in the small screen. When I click enter, my typing leaves the screen. How do I get the text to use the editing toolbar. It is greyed out, so it is not available.
Thank you for your help.

My guess is the chapter has scenes and when click on chapter you are in scrivenings view. Try clicking on a scene within the chapter and see if that works for you.

It looks like the chapter is in the corkboard. How do I get it off the corkboard and back to the binder?
Thanks for the reply

Use the View → Document command or click on the “document” icon to the right-center of the window.

The Corkboard and the Editor are two different views of the same information.

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend taking a look at our Interactive Tutorial, available from the Help menu. It’s a good overview of the Scrivener interface.

Thanks. I did the whole interactive tutorial. I am still confused about what to expect, at times. If I had started the novel from scratch on Scrivener, the tutorial would have been all I needed, but the whole import thing has taken me for a loop. I will try your solution and let you know if that works for me.

I unclicked the corkboard in the document view and now the chapter is missing or empty. I need a more step-by-step approach.

There’s a set of three buttons in a box centered in the Main Toolbar. The middle button is active, so any folder or document with subdocuments will show Index Cards on a Corkboard.

To switch to Document mode, click the left button of the three. If the editor shows several documents, click on one document to switch to single document mode.

When text in the Main Editor is selected or the cursor is in the text, the Format Toolbar becomes available.

I’m not sure what I’ve done to my novel. I checked the document box and the chapter is still empty. I checked with other chapters; some of them come into view, while others don’t . Is it possible I mislabeled the chapters when I imported the novel? I appreciate your help. I’m going to read the Scrivener manual and see where I went wrong.

The chapters I can 't see are labeled as “synopses” but there is no content. The whole chapter is in the synopses. I can see part of the text in the binder. Can I convert a synopsis to a chapter that I can edit?

Cut and paste the text from the small Synopsis area to the large Main Editor.

Thanks. That’s probably the only answer. I appreciate your time

Or use the Documents → Auto-Fill → Send Synopsis to Main Text command.

I’d recommend making a backup first, just in case. File → Backup → Backup Now.
