Hello,
I’m new to this forum and Scrivener. I’ve been working with the system for a few days now, have done the tutorial and many of the online videos. I’ve figured quite a few things out, but this problem I just can’t get.
I’m trying to compile a novel into MOBI format, and I want the front matter that is normally centered…author info, copyright page, dedication etc to STAY centered. I’ve already got several novels published through Amazon with other publishers so I know kindle viewers can see this front matter in this way. I’m looking at a novel on a Kindle paperwhite as we speak that has the front area exactly how I want it. That’s why I’m so confused. The problem’s not on the Amazon side of things. So where is this in Scrivener that I’m missing?
I’ve done everything I can think of, searched the forums, checked and unchecked formatting options in compile and nothing works. I CAN export it as an epub and then have kengen recompile it, but that seems like an extra step for nothing. Plus I’m worried that it may add extra “stuff” to the document when I try and upload it. (I’m not a techie, so I may be worrying for nothing.)
Anyway, how do I make the centered front matter in my document, stay centered? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
CJ
Hi
During compile, AS-IS will keep the text centred, if that is how you’ve got it set in the editor.

Hey Briar,
That is one of the things I tried, but with no success.
I’m thinking it’s a combination of checked and unchecked and I just don’t have the combo yet. If you or anyone has it, I’m all happy ears.
Hey all,
Woohoo!!!
So as I’m dinking around, I notice something. I’ve only got my front matter in this one file which I was trying to put into a mobi format, right? Just to check it. And it wouldn’t center. BUT…
I added a few Chapters into the manuscript and compiled it again with the exact same boxes checked (as Briar suggested As-Is was one of them) and to my surprise, it worked!!! All the front matter is now centered.
To check, I removed the chapters and compiled again and it went right back to left aligned. How about that???
I don’t know why adding the chapters fixed it, but at least I can continue on. If anyone has any ideas of WHY this happened so I don’t stumble again, again, all happy ears!!!
Thanks!
CJ
I was going to suggest making sure you had Page Break Before selected as well. Maybe adding text gives the break structure that Scrivener needs?!?
Expect a dev will explain.
Glad you got it to work.
Thanks again, Briar.
I’ll do that. It’s in the Inspector, right? I think I remember that part of the demo.
Will add it to check list.

I organise “Page Break Before” settings in Compile > Contents. The Inspector is also possible, and the Outliner as well.
Don’t know the technical reasons as such, but have seen in other threads that the types of breaks used in Scrivener help the program to understand a project’s structure, which in turn impacts on the compiled design, layout, ToC, etc.
Got it. Thanks. I appreciate the time.
