Hello. New to script writing mode, which I am using for certain scenes in a novel.
Two questions:
It seems that new Character is default set to bold text. How do I get rid of this? Every time I press Tab or Enter the Character name text is bold and I have to unbold it before I type the first letter of character’s name.
I am converting certain scenes to script mode and need a shortcut key to CAPITALISE some sentences. In Word, the shortcut is SHIFT CMD U or SHIFT FN F3. I have tried in Apple Settings Keyboard Shortcuts to create the same shortcut in Scrivener but it is not working. Is there a keyboard shortcut in Scrivener for CAPITALISING & also one for INITIAL CAPITALISING pls
To change how Scrivener’s auto-formatting of the script elements behaves, you can go to the Format > Scriptwriting > Script Settings panel.
There, you’ll select the element you need to change–like the Character–and alter its font settings.
For general tips on using Scrivener’s scriptwriting tools, I recommend reviewing Chapter 19 in the manual. You can access a PDF of the manual from Scrivener’s Help menu. In that chapter, §19.7.2 has tips on the formatting panel and its tabs.
For capitalizing an entire sentence, I would highlight the full sentence and then use Scrivener’s Edit > Transformations > Make Uppercase.
You might also test out adding a shortcut in the macOS for that. This Apple Support article has their process for creating shortcuts. Depending on your macOS, you might also have the option to make that command specific to Scrivener.
Other third-party apss like BetterTouchTool, Keyboard Maestro, or PopClip can also be handy for those kinds of tasks.
Thank you so much @RuthS This is ALL going to be so helpful! I really needed answers to those questions.
With the capitalising question…I still have question. I DID set up a shortcut for it, specifically for the App Scrivener in my Apple Systems Settings but Scrivener is not acknowledging it. I tried everything. I would be so handy if Scrivener updated so that they use the same shortcut that Word uses.
I have another quesiton. Should I ask it here? It is about Script Layout in epub compile. It does not seem to acknowledge it when I have various chapters in Script Mode within a novel. Should I make a new question to the forum regarding that question?
When setting up a new shortcut in the macOS, I’ve found that you have to follow the Apple Support steps exactly. And that the formatting of the command is exacting.
For example, I’m using macOS 15.4.1. To get this shortcut to work, here is what my entry in the System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts looks like:
If I have any extra spaces in that menu command line, the shortcut will not work.
For your scriptwriting question, it looks like that’s already been split into a new discussion here.
I recommend posting your followup question or relevant screenshots there to keep the threads focused on specific topics.
