How do I find out how many words are in each chapter folder of my manuscript? Some have one scene some have more. I Know how many words I have done for the day/project. I can’t remember how I did this on another project.
In the Outline view there are various sorts of information columns you can enable, one of which will show the word counts you are looking for. When you survey your manuscript in outline view any folders showing will have an accompanying word count.
If you click a Chapter folder and view it in Scrivenings mode, you’ll see the word count for the entire folder, including all subdocuments, in the footer. If you want to see the word count for all chapters, I’d view the Manuscript folder in Outline mode and @gr suggested. You may need to control-click the submenu (near Title, Label, etc.) to check the Wordcount option for it to be displayed. Then, you can see the wordcount for each folder and document at once.
How do I show the word count for a folder, or a selection of documents?
I’m sure I used to be able to simply highlight the docs I want to count and get a word count, but now I get no word count. If I put the pointer in the search section at the top it gives me a number that is way off the real total.
Display those selected documents as a scrivening?
You’ll get a combined word count at the bottom of the editor.
Or Project / Statistics
, “selected documents” tab.
The number you get in the toolbar is for the whole draft.
I searched this topic via forum and off site, but failed to find what I was looking for. I did find one possiblity but it was dated 2008.
My question, is it possible for Scrivener to give me a total word count in an individual chapter? i.e. I want to know how many words in chapter 3.
Best I can find are total word count for the project and a scene (footer) but not a chapter.
I’m thinking should be a way to click the chapter folder and find the count. Thanks.
Hello. Concepts like “chapter” or “scenes” depend on the writer. For example, I put each chapter in a document and not divided by scenes. I guess there are several ways to achieve what you want, my method is to select the documents whose words you want to count (in binder o corkboard) and go to “Project => Text Statistics”.
Regards.
Another approach, that scales to the wide variety of ways in which one might conceptualise a “chapter”, is to select that thing individually in the binder, and then switch to Scrivenings mode via the View menu. The footer bar shows the accumulated count for all of the text in the editor, whether one or a hundred items, depending on how detailed the outline is.
Thanks for the feedback on this. It helped me find what I was looking for.
