China Miéville: Perdido Street Station (fantasy)

I am currently rereading “Perdido Street Station” by China Miéville.
I absolutely love the way he makes his world believable. There is such an amount of detail in the different cultures he describes, the characters have interesting issues to come to terms with and even the side characters get their great scenes and side plot.

The world he creates is fresh and differs a lot from current fantasy mainstream. Maybe it’s the steampunk elements which I have always enjoyed?

His language is a bit complex for a non native speaker like me and it has put off a friend of mine whom I lent the book once. Me, i just can’t put it down. I am not decided though if PSS is better than the standalone sequel “The Scar” or the other way round…
