Right now it’s not possible to add comments to PDFs within Scrivener. But it strikes me that the new “pop-up” comments in Scrivener 2 (that is, the ones that aren’t inline) would be great for annotating/commenting on PDFs. This would be very helpful for research: it would be similar to just taking “document notes” about the PDF, except that they would be keyed to certain locations in the PDF, which would help to keep the notes organized.
Thanks once again for the fantastic product!
David
Hi,
Scrivener will never be a PDF editor and I have no plans at all to turn it into one. (Scrivener can never become a full editor for all the file types it imports - that way madness lies.) Instead, open the PDF file in an external editor using the button in the footer bar (you can even choose which editor to open it in by clicking and holding the button), make changes in your preferred PDF editor, save, and click on the “reload” button in the footer to see your changes reflected in Scrivener.
Best,
Keith
I see the madness! The new pop-up comments just feel less like editing than they seem like a version of the notetaking that we already do alongside PDFs with Document Notes. (I suspect that’s less true on the implementation side of things than it is on the user-facing side, though.)
The workflow for moving over to an external editor and then coming back to Scrivener is very slick, though. A nice compromise!
