Compile to Word >> unreadable content

Hello all,

Did the same thing I’ve always done, in trying to compile several chapters over to Word - and was met with the following:

1st pop-up, on trying to open the .docx document:

"The Open XML file [name.docx] cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /).

Details
The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."

I only have the option to click OK.

As soon as I do, up pops the 2nd message, this time with the Word logo/icon enclosed in the box [I presume the first one is a macOS message, and the 2nd is generated by MS Word??]

"Word found unreadable [I first thought it said “unreasonable” ] content in [name.docx]. Do you want to recover the contents of this document? If you trust the source of this document, click Yes."

I am offered YES or NO.

Hitting YES opens it in Word, but all the formatting is a mess, with the footnotes being placed inline etc.

I then tried compiling to "Microsoft Word 97-2004 (.doc), and could open it without issue.
It pushes the inline annotations off to the side as comments though, and with it being opened in Compatibility Mode, would prefer to get the .docx version working?

Any suggestions?

Do I start from the top, section by section, to narrow down which section of the text might be the issue, or is this a broader problem?

Using partial compiles to narrow down the problem is what I’d recommend. Pay particular attention to material that is new since you last compiled the manuscript successfully, and material that was imported from other formats.
