Compiling Delay

Until this morning, I had no trouble compiling for print the individual scenes in Act One of a play. However, the compiling process now stalls.

I ran each file individually through the compile process and checked its metadata to ensure that it would be included. Each file was ready to print, so there do not appear to be any corrupted files.

However, when I attempt to compile and print several files, the compiling process stalls.

I have no difficulty compiling and printing Act Two.

When I changed the format from Script or Screenplay Copy under Project Formats to Manuscript (Courier) or Script or Screenplay Copy under Scrivener Formats, the files in Act One compiled and printed without any problem.

Can anyone explain why the compiling process stalled initially?

I hope this workaround benefits someone in the future.

This suggests that there’s a difference between the two formats. The “Project Formats” would be either your edited version or one that came with the project template you used, the “Scrivener Formats” are the ones that come with Scrivener.

One troubleshooting step would be to duplicate the Scrivener Format you used into Project Formats, making no other changes (but give it a unique name so you can identify it). Does it still work?

Yes, it does. Thanks!

Then the issue is with the format you created (in Project Formats), rather than anything to do with Scrivener itself. So, how does that format differ from the ones that do work?

I have no idea. I tried the old format again, and it worked. Just a glitch. (It’s a fourteen-year-old Mac.) I’ll try to figure out what the differences are between the two formats. Again, thanks for all your help!

Are you storing the project with iCloud, Dropbox, or any similar service? If the component files that you’re trying to Compile have to be downloaded from a remote server, that might cause this sort of delay.

(And if you do have files stored exclusively in the cloud, change that setting as it can cause all kinds of even less benign issues, too.)

I back up my files on iCloud, but the current project is always on my desktop.

Always on your desktop, but do you have optimise storage or whatever it’s called turned on? If it is, it will appear on your desktop but be stored on iCloud, which is not what you want

No, optimize storage is deactivated.
