Compiling to pdf added a lot of errors, am I missing something?

Things that went wrong.

  • italics turned into underlines
  • occasional underlines in dialogue and sentences for no reason
  • extra #'s in section breaks and at end of some chapters
  • blank pages between section breaks

Wrote my first novel, compiled it, sent to beta readers and uh oh.

First Place to look at is settings in the Compile Format you are using. Double click it to open the Compile Format Designer and start by checking the settings in these two sections.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I’ll work on it. I suffered massive cognitive loss a couple years back so I’m tempted to say F it and just not use scrivener if I have to learn a ton just to be able to have what I wrote in a pdf.

Scrivener has preset templates. Try several of these with no changes and if still a problem would be glad to try and help you if you’re willing to send me your project. I could play with it. The other with a pdf output is if choose pdf to print. Just save to pdf alone.

Especially for beta-level output, the Default Compile Format is a good place to start. It sends things through to the output document pretty much as-is.
For page/section breaks, though, be sure to look at the Section Layouts you’re assigning. See Section 23.3 in the (Mac) manual for more information.
