Composition Mode Bug?

I tried searching this but didn’t find this particular problem. I’m trying to customize composition mode, and I get it set up all pretty in the background . . . but I went to adjust text colors & accidentally changed the editor color and now I can’t change the transparency setting on the page portion of the composition mode, so instead of my nice aesthetic background, I just have a gray box over where I wanted my writing to be.

If I have a background image set in composition mode, the Page Fade slider just doesn’t do anything; if I do not have a background image set, the page fader . . . fades the composition window over everything except the page setting, i.e. where my desktop screen will show up through the program.

I have no idea what I hit to cause this, and I’ve been through various settings and can’t find anything related, but it’s visually distracting and this is the second custom theme I’ve tried to set up that’s done this. Restarting the program does not help.

Also, I’ve seen around that some people have access to a “focus mode” that blurs everything except the current line. Is this a version difference between Mac & Windows, or is my version of Scrivener not updating properly? I’ve only recently installed Scrivener 3 and checked for updates this afternoon, and it says it’s all updated, but . . .

I’m only trying to duplicate the problem (but so far have failed). (We should be on the same version because mine also says that it’s updated… it’s 3.1.1.0 (1463331) 64-bit - 03 Nov 2021)

I put an image in the background of my composition mode. Then I changed my editor color from #212630 to #2d533d (semi-random choice). My composition editor is now that strange green color. I can still change the “Paper fade” of that green, so I see more of the background image through my editor. So IF I UNDERSTAND you, I failed to duplicate this. Did I understand you correctly? NOTE: That change in the “Paper fade” takes a few seconds to show up. You likely know that so maybe that’s immaterial.

After doing the above, I removed the background image (leaving my editor that green color) and ON MINE, the “background fade” slider is there again and does fade the background (and not the composition window). So again, I think I failed to duplicate the issue.

Trying to duplicate it again, I decided to also change my text color from #a8b0bf to a semi-randomly chosen #0055ff. (Whew, not a great choice… hahaha) STILL, NO GO on duplicating the problem.

QUESTIONS: Now I’m wondering exactly where you changed these (not sure whether there are multiple places).

  • I changed the image in Project Settings > Background Images > Composition Mode Backdrop
  • I changed the text and editor colors in File > Options > Appearance > Composition Mode > Colors (then selected Editor and Text in succession).

Is that how you did it?

That is how I went about doing it. I will attempt including some images:

Edited to Continue, as I wanted to make sure the pictures worked and didn’t break things – you have understood my problem, yes |||orz thank you for your time and I appreciate your patience!

Thanks for the images… those did help.
I notice that your document is empty (no words or characters). That should not be any issue and I tried mine with a blank document. The Paper Fade slider to the left on mine does fade out the paper (unlike your picture 1). The slider to the left on mine looks just like your picture 2 (as it should).

Mine acts just like yours with NO IMAGE (slider to the right makes the background not visible, and the slider to the left shows the full background). THAT part is correct, right?

There must be a setting that I did not change which makes my Paper Fade (when with a background image) not adjust your paper. That is strange. So far, I can’t get mine to do that. Can you think of any other possible settings that were changed?

Stupid question, but that image DOES have something on the left side, right? (Yeah, I’m grasping at straws without being able to play with the settings on your machine… hahaha)

Did you use (for Project Settings > Background > Composition Mode) the “Choose from disk” or did you use “Use image from project”… I’m just wondering if that could change how it acts. (Of course, it shouldn’t but who knows?)
UPDATE: I just tried that… still, mine seems to work correctly, even using an image from the project.

QUESTION: Are you in dark mode? I noticed that your pop-up for character and word count is dark. I’ve found several things to not work as well in dark mode (they’re working on that mode still). IF YOU ARE, try it without. (I tried dark and still could not duplicate the issue, but I’ve not done all the previous tests in dark mode).

The image I’m using for my Composition Mode background is here:

I did use “Choose from Disk” – I’m not actually sure how “Use Image from Project” works . . .

I am currently on a custom theme that started in Dark Mode (I wanted to see if reloading the custom theme fixed the issue, but it didn’t even change my composition background RIP), but the other custom theme I was trying started in Solarized Light, so I don’t know that that’s the issue, and restarting in Dark Mode doesn’t fix the problem either . . . I’ve restarted the program, but maybe I should restart my laptop? I’m running Windows 10 but the machine itself is refurbished so I’ll try that and report back.

Thank you again for your patience!

ETA: And no dice. |||orz

Nice backdrop for the document!
It’ll be interesting if a reboot actually makes a difference. I would not guess so, but it easily could be (ESPECIALLY if Windows had a pending update… Windows is really poor at handling a pending update that requires a reboot. Very odd things happen quite frequently in that case.)

I’d consider trying the default template (just for this test) and NOT selecting dark mode, ONLY because I’ve heard of strange issues that they are still working out in Dark Mode. I STARTED in Dark Mode when I first downloaded version 3… but quickly went away because of other issues I had with it.

The “use image from project” does what it says, and I’m thinking that it’s a way to just not force anyone to have to sort through how the actual storage works. Some may like to use their cover from the project.

Thank you!! i think I might wanna make the page section a little wider when I get the chance but I’m pleased with it so far~ It’s really nice to have something similar to ZenWriter within Scrivener and I’m excited to play around with all the new features in 3 OwO

So restarting my laptop didn’t work, but I uninstalled and re-installed the whole program and that seems to have fixed it for now! If I run into this problem again, I’ll try and pick out when exactly things go wrong, but for now I’ll play it safe and only work off of the default theme, eheh.

Thank you so much for your patience and insight!! I’ll be careful of Dark Mode haha

Thanks so much for the follow-through. I’m glad a reinstall worked. Like you, I actually like dark mode, but when I saw it cause some kind of feature failure (I can’t recall what it was) I abandoned it and will wait until it’s more fully repaired. If L&L triaged it behind things like details of compiling, I totally agree. But I do look forward to using it. (“careful of Dark Mode…” that’s funny.)

All the best to you.
