Computer death, and an old scrivener

Hi all,
I just had some questions I was hoping someone here might be able to answer. So for context I have been using an older version of scrivener, and my laptop started only being able to be used as long as it was plugged in, naturally I got a new battery. I installed it, and laptop would no longer power on.
So anyway, I got a new laptop, trying now to pull over files from the old hard drive now, and am trying to download the upgraded scrivener, Given that it is a new computer, it wouldn’t be a direct upgrade right? My old version was so old I don’t recall actually getting a liscense, like 2014/2015 old. I would just be getting the new scrivener, and trying to open the old files on the new version. Will my old files be ok? Does this sound like the right way to go?
Thank you in advance,
Dan

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of good resources on L&L’s FAQ on their website. see the following which appears to answer your question.

Back in 2014/2015 Scrivener for Windows was on version 1.
In late 2021 it moved to version 3, requiring an upgrade licence, since it’s a major upgrade with many new features.
Version 2 was skipped on Windows for the sake of a semblance of parity between the Mac and Windows versions. Since then both are at v.3–with differing sub-version builds.
In terms of the licence, I believe you’d qualify for an upgrade discount—L&L would have a record if you recall the email address associated with the original purchase of v.1.
The good news is when opening a version 1 file in version 3, the program will offer to upgrade the old format to the current, and still retain the old in case something is amiss and you require support.
So look around the FAQ link you received and contact support for any shortcomings you might experience if you wish to go the upgrade route.
If support provides you with the v.1 licence, you even have the option to upgrade to the last version of version 1–for free, which ironed out earlier in version bugs.
