Continuing Compile Confusion!

Well, thanks to this forum I’ve made some progress in compiling - BUT - I cannot get my chapter titles* in the font/size that I want. I’ve tried everything and I don’t understand why it isn’t working. They just remain in the default size no matter what I do. I’ve spent so many days trying to get to grips with this that I’m tearing my hair out! I have a (new) book to write!
*By titles I mean, simply, “CHAPTER 1” (for example). Nothing fancy. I also can’t really tell if it should be controlled via the Chapter Title setting or the Chapter Heading setting. I’ve tried both to no avail.
Any thoughts?
Many thanks, Gail

I read a book by a non L&L contributor Antoni Dol on mastering scrivener 3 and about 1/5 of the book is devoted to compiling in great detail. the ebook is 11 bucks on amazon and found very helpful, writing my first draft of first book 22,000 words in.
Quick thing to help. Open compile , decide output format first (ebook-etc), then copy a format on left pane in compile window and duplicate it by clicking + sign in lower left corner. Name this copy NEW E Book format or whatever. Now can edit this duplicated format to your heart’s content.

Next make sure what you want to compile has appropiate headings. In right hand panel will see all files and folders in the draft section and make sure all chapters assigned same section type (can create in Project settings) . Can either assign section types in compile window or by right clicking any file in binder and choosing section type. Now once this is done move on the next step.

In compile panel in middle is section layout when click this click chapter headings and assign layout option. Often can almost get layout way you want this way. Then click on scenes and assign layout title and text or text only for example. When done click ALL assigning section types at the same time click ok button at bottom of section. Move to next step.

Go to duplicated format and double click will open new panel where can edit various settings in such as section type. Here is where can adjust chapter font and other settings. should look like included picture. (can only edit duplicated formats)
Stongly suggest Antoni’s book (get nothing from referral)

Thanks! I’ll try it all - including the book. (NB: I already bought one book - “An Everyday Guide to Scrivener 3 for Windows” and it seems quite good.) If I’m honest, I guess my biggest problem is that I’ve been trying to avoid spending days and days on learning the new setup (even though I know that, once I’ve got it sussed it will be brilliant). I’m so far behind, I could weep. BUT - I think I’m going to have to face reality and just get stuck into a long learning curve and accept falling behind. What’s frustrating is that I’m 98% there. Maybe even 99%. It’s just that I can’t get the spacing at the top of each page right (changes don’t seem to take effect) nor can I get the “Chapter X” font correct. The rest is looking reasonably okay (although on my last attempt, I introduced an error somewhere - now all the pages are running together).
Thank you for your help!

The other suggestion use a collection and compile only that collection not whole document so can experiment and quickly compile a small file including front, back matter, toc and maybe 2 chapters with contained scenes. Tweak your format till have what you want and will compile quickly. try adjusting section layout as can quickly get new look without a deep dive.

Thanks! That’s an excellent idea.

If you have the binder setup so that chapters are folders and scenes are subdocuments, you’ll make the adjustment to whatever Section Layout is assigned to your chapter folders.
