Cookbook-in-a-Day!

A good point!

I was planning on just using people’s forum names for this one. I.e., I’ll be listed as “pigfender” instead of my usual pen name of “Sir Tyrone Octogon Caliper-Smythe III”

Plausible gastronomic deniability. Heh-heh.

Looks like the protagonist of my story is going to be a piece of long cut pasta who has a run in with their arch-nemesis, a shady character known to everyone as “Al Dente”.

And I wonder what role alfredo (“Al Fredo”?) sauce plays in your tale.

As for my beet greens, I don’t have a fully formed story yet, but we’ll see. Inspiration often strikes at just the right moment.

Put me down for “Possum Eggs”.

Oh now I’m thinking I should make Stone Soup.

Geez. I can’t think of any stories. I’m glad I still have a month. I think at best, I can come up with a story-once-removed from the food. But it’s not even a good story. And it’s not about the food, but about the person who’d made the food at another family event.
I have a lot of thinks to do.:thinking::thinking:

Hello to all.
I am new to the forum and my name is Luca. Happy to join you. I find the sound very great.

So you’re trying to disqualify a story based on being about someone/something that is important? These are the exact stories that must be told!

Listen, I’m a guy who thinks too much about how food is the center of the universe. The most popular (unpublished) thing I’ve written is a mini-biography of my grandmother which “seems” to be about fruitcake. Most of my relatives are simultaneously disappointed and excited that the fruitcake is only mentioned in the opening and closing paragraphs. The ENTIRE story is about how amazing a person my grandmother was to the 8yr old me. It is these stories that I want to read. “Here is how Q changed my life… oh, here’s a burger seasoning I like to add to chicken.”

For the record, I buy cookbooks that tell stories. Don’t really make the dishes, but the insights into the lives people lead around food (glorious food!) fascinates me.

Not sure piggy will admit to it, but he plays a prominent role in one of my favorite personal food stories. That story is waiting to be told. Maybe it will be in my cookbook.

Bonus points for the “Oliver!” allusion.

For myself I am just glad the Pigfender didn’t decide to assign a surprise recipe to each participant — you must cook this in the next 24 hours and write a story about it while stirring constantly! Whew, dodged a spatula there.

Oh my word! Now I think I need to do yellow cake because of my grandma.

I’m pretty sure I do too.
The real problem is that the story isn’t really much. And I don’t know my cousin-in-law very well.
But my gma making yellow cake might be better. I’ll have to ponder now.

Definitely happy that didn’t happen too. Whew.

The part that is making this hard is I have a stack of recipe stories already written! My wife is urging me to cheat but I’m all “IT IS A NIAD!!!” Which, to me, means that it should be original.

Oddly, her first question to me was it using my existing works would prevent me from publishing my own cookbook. After I cleaned the coffee off all the walls of the dining room, I informed her that she thinks way more of my scribblings and cooking than publishers. Apparently that idea has stuck in my craas I literally made reference to putting my own cookbook out in this thread.

This woman is killing me.

The moment you stop caring about limitations, whether imposed by self or others, is the moment you are truly free  I can tell you’re going to pick a good recipe for this event, original or adapted.

Well… Poseidon gratefully bestowed CiaD several options! Looks like we will be having cobia and/or weakfish as our main. The Mrs is super excited to have a couple weeks of fresh fish in the house as well as being able to force me to create meals worthy of her eating them.

Current menu for “dinner with an idiot”:

  1. Butter and fish with fancy stuff
  2. Drunken collards
  3. “What happened to the rice” rice
  4. Adam’s “tell me one more time an old fashioned can’t be made with rum!” old fashioned

Boss lady says I have to write an original story so y’all may enjoy the eats more then the reads.
