Creating an Alias for a Scrivener document/project

I’m not looking to do anything too complicated, but I’ve set up a folder of things I am working on and inside that folder are aliases to the locations where the files live. (I would like to keep them in their context.)

Every time I create an alias, it first looks normal, but then it switches to the generic white document. When I double-click to open it, I get:

Item “pirate” is used by macOS and can’t be opened.

What am I missing?

A folder in Finder, or somewhere else?

Do the items in question open correctly if you don’t use the alias?
