Creating an Interactive PDF Table of Contents for PDF Readers

I’m having a challenge with this one.

I don’t mean a clickable table of contents in one of the first pages with links, but rather the table that can be accessed from every page on PDF viewers (or even Kindle). In Preview on Mac, whenever I open my compiled PDF and sort the view by Table of Contents, nothing appears.

I could make it happen by opening the project’s docx format in LibreOffice and exporting as a PDF, selecting an option that includes the word “Bookmarks”.

I’ve set sections, headings and subheadings. I use a modified PDF compile format which I haven’t changed much, and the PDF outline option is enabled.

Can you guys help me with this?

Where have you set the headings and subheadings? Is the structure of the document reflected in the Binder, or not?

First three docs are set to Heading (Cover, Contents, Intro), then Parts as folders are set to Heading (there are six Parts), in each Part, every Chapter is a folder that is set to Sub-heading, and the Subchapters from within Chapters are set to Section.

I can see that before compiling the project, and I’d say the structure is reflected in the Binder, yes.

I’m using macOS Sequoia 15.1, if that helps.

If you can, include either a copy of the project or a sample project that demonstrates the issue. This should work, so I’ll need to see your specific settings to understand why it isn’t.
