Creating the TOC is a Mystery to Me

I have been searching the Scrivener User Manual of creating and formating a TOC. I see that the User Manual for Scrivener has a TOC at the begining and one at each section that is more detailed. I can see how to do that. The problem I am having it how to have scrivener generate a TOC that has Roman numerals for Parts, All Caps for Sections, or dotted numbering system for each chapter or sub-chapter. Does any one know if the TOC’s used in the Scrivener User Manual is automatically generated of is it a hybrid of auto and manual? I want to know if it is possible to configure Scrivener to generate a properly formatted TOC. Or should I stop wishing for gold at the end of the rainbow?

My publisher is requesting a TOC for the first submission. It needs to be more than ‘Chapter 1, Chapter 2 …’ Page numbers is helpful, which I know how to do.

I would like to utilize headers and sub-headers in the TOC if possible. Is that possible? I chose unique formating for those.

Unless your publisher takes LaTeX files (.tex), then you wouldn’t be able to copy how the user manual is doing this. This is probably the most comprehensive post on how I would work with ToCs, were I to use word processors instead of LaTeX for formatting the final PDFs.

In short though, I wouldn’t bother with trying to do any of this in Scrivener itself. It’s going to be very labour intensive, not only to create them initially, but to keep them up to date if the outline is revised in any way. This feature in Scrivener is better thought of as a convenience for quick proofing rather than a production tool.

I have a TOC and want to create a PDF of my book. However the format of the TOC in the PDF file is not mine. I can change the editor format or the format in the Layout Name and switch Override on and off and nothing affects the final TOC in the PDF file. Where else can it be overridden?
