Dictation doesnt work when a hub with scarlett audio hooked up

Before we get off the rails and i get all the workarounds, I know this might not be a bug but it feels like it could be. Second, I understand there is a unique setup here with audio device.

All that said, Mac give you the option in settings to choose recording input. Listing mac itself, the scarlett, and even other things like iphone.

Ive chosen just the internal mic because its my favorite and i usually use MBPro not connected to a hub and at my studio desk.

BUT! I have tried the phone AND I have tried the scarlett device with its own mic. None of those scenarios does dictation work. Though the mac makes the ding and acts like it thinks its dictating no words go into the scrivener editor.

Having said that, when im NOT hooked up to anything i have no problem and it works flawlessly. But id like to work at my studio and honestly the interfaces and UI is making it seem like….Just choose your preferred input device and we’ll make it happen. It doesnt.

also this isnt a crazy scenario. its one USBC hub with 2 displays and audio device connected.

Personally I feel like this should work but I know that i could get the ….”well we dont know what hub you have, we only support this or that. and that would be ok too. im just being a reporter and sharing. Thank you!

This is probably a Mac support question, not a Scrivener support question. We just use what Mac OS sends us. How does TextEdit behave?

USB audio interfaces in general encounter problems with some/many USB hubs, especially those that draw power from a host computer through the USB-C cable. Hubs that have their own power supply reportedly work better; that’s been my experience. I have a Focusrite Scarlett device (as well as some other audio interfaces). Mine usually works with a CalDigit TS3 Plus, but my default now is to connect my Scarlett directly to my Mac. You could try other hubs, or try connecting directly to your Mac.

More info here on the support site for Focusrite: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207547015-Troubleshooting-USB-audio-interface-issues#

Good luck!
