Difference in the brackets?

Here are what I thought were two similar citations:
(Langton, 1215)

[Pruitt, S. (2018) .]

Why the difference in the parens/brackets? Is there some significance to the diff?

The square brackets are probably used because the second citation already has parentheses for the year.

But where are these coming from? Did bibliography software generate them for you?
