Dropbox —> Unzip —> project.scrivx access denied

After getting a new Windows 8 computer, I tried to restore the Scrivener project that my old dying computer automatically zipped and saved to Dropbox.

After unzipping the file I double clicked on the project.scrivx file.

The system reported:

Cannot access … project.scrivx
File is not writable. Access is denied.
Auto-saves need write permission to your project.

I right clicked and chose properties. There was no way to change the Read Only property.

Would it help if I went back to the old computer and simply moved the whole project into Dropbox? Or would I wind up with a similar problem when trying to open the project on my new computer?

When you double-click on a zipped archive on Windows, it opens the folder so you can view the contents in a read-only state, but it doesn’t “unzip” the archive and allow you full access to the contents. To do that, you need to either right-click the zipped folder and choose “Extract All” or double-click the folder to open it and then drag out the contents (in this case, the .scriv folder) to another location. You’ll then be able to open the project in Scrivener as normal.
