I know aeon timeline is a better tool for this, but I prefer more visual tools to help me keep track of things. Scapple is a perfect fit for this.
I just wish there was built in support for it.
I just want to be able to easily create timelines with emojis or images alongside the date.
I currently use obsidian to make my timeline diagrams for my projects. However, I can’t customize the timeline diagram to the same extent a mind map in Scapple. It’s just more intuitive and customizable. In Scapple I can easily change the position of a note or an image compared to obsidian.
To clarify, I want to use scapple to create vertical and horizontal timeline diagrams for tracking a project or creating a daily log.
Currently there is no built-in option create the timeline diagram line and attach notes or emojis or images
Specifically I want the be able to easily create
the literal line with points that make a vertical or horizontal timeline and a new circular textbox style for holding emojis or images. My reference is the image I posted for the horizontal timeline, but it should work for both horizontal and vertical timelines.
The user experience Is not the same. I want to easily create point and connect them in a line without having to worry about alignment. This is equivalent of using a line to create shape. Technically it can be done, but most people would
give up due to the friction.
You can also use Apple Freeform to create shapes and icons and copy/paste them into Scapple. Also, Control-Command-Spacebar to use emojis and copy/paste them into Scapple.
The timeline example I created for that reply was rather simple and crude; you should see the real one.
BTW: you should really explore the ‘scenes’ function within it. Basically, you can group areas of your Freeform board into scenes and navigate to them. I created a map of the town and surrounding areas for a novel I’m writing; every neighborhood or rural section is grouped like this. That way I can just zoom right to a particular area of the map rather than try to view the whole thing, which can be unwieldly. The same function can be used for areas of your timeline (parts of a day, week, era…)
Look at simplemind pro is a mind map with one time fee and have sample mind maps on it. I added an image where have a time line for each act. Easy to increase length of timeline by clicking + sign on Diamond header. With Simplemind pro can add text for each note which leave a dot and is visible in an Inspector like the note area of Scrivener. So the Mind map does not show large amounts of text.
Here is one configuration of this.
Let’s be clear about how you’re using a timeline. If you’re using it to present information in a graphic, then sure, the sky is the limit on how to create it. Scapple is one possibility, though you’ve expressed dissatisfaction with drawing timelines with it.
I have a large whiteboard on the wall in my studio. Nothing beats it for writing any kind of timeline or other representation of my writing. I just snap a photo with my smartphone to capture it. Old-school, to be sure, but I can draw things any way I want without concern for what some software developer offers through an app.
However, if you want a tightly-coupled (synced) visual view of your writing project, such as tracking historical events or those in a work of fiction, Aeon Timeline is the only timeline tool I know of that syncs with Scrivener. I use it and Scrivener to write my novel series. The point is that I need timeline software to help me with writing my novels; I don’t need it to present information for others. That’s why I’m not particularly concerned that I can’t get a vertical timeline; the horizontal timeline is just fine, and to be honest, it’s the one I’d choose anyway. I particularly value the Subway view, showing me where my characters, places, objects, and so on come together in each of my scenes. For that, it’s magic.
We’re all different, but the main point is that you can use a wide array of apps to make a wonderful timeline, or even a whiteboard. However, if you want something tightly integrated with Scrivener, Aeon Timeline is amazing.
Thanks for the recommendation, I been using simplemind pro to make tasklists with multiple columns, and a timeline to keep track of my project’s progress. It’s been a game changer.
At some point I’ll probably cave and buy aeon timeline. Especially for long projects that have sprints. However, for now I think this will do.
I have the image I showed you from a 4 act story I, IIA, IIB, III . I can send if you want. Message me. Also has a minimal in the lower right which allows quick navigation.
