Edit Scrivener options greyed-out

I’m obviously doing something wrong but I cannot access any of the different options under View> Edit Scrivenings apart from Selection (when I select pages from the Binder) because they are not available, greyed out. How do I choose Content Included in Manuscript?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Steps have already been taken to make this experience much less confusing in the future. As it stands right now, you have to know what modes apply to which selection types. That will be automatically done for you in the next version. The rule of thumb is that the top three modes work when you have a single folder or document stack selected in the Binder. Then everything beneath that point will be included in the Edit Scrivenings session (unless you choose one of the filtering options, obviously). If you make an arbitrary selection of several documents in the Binder, the only option available is the fourth. The idea is, if you specifically selected documents to view in Edit Scrivenings, it doesn’t make sense to filter them because you selected them.

Thanks for that. I tried it out but could only get the first two options available from a single folder. If, as I am doing in my novel, I have alternative scenes in certain chapters (rather than different snapshots of the same scene) when I come to Edit Scrivenings, currently to view the whole manuscript and get an important word count, I would need to select all the individual scenes by hand rather than use Content Included in Manuscript. In version 2.0, will those options still only apply to one folder as a time or to a whole manuscript. I guess Edit Scrivenings is really for just looking at a chapter or a few scenes at a time and if you wanted to see the whole book you would use Compile Manuscript but that doesn’t produce a word count does it or allow you to edit?

Are you positive the folder you selected has a mixed set of items set for inclusion? I think those functions react to the conditions: if nothing in the folder is excluded, then the option to show only excluded items will not be available, for example—and if there is only one excluded item it still won’t show it because an Edit Scrivenings session of one is just a text editing session.

Okay. Now it works. Thanks. What about the other part of my query. Will these options still be restricted to one folder at a time in 2.0?

If you select the Draft folder and enter Edit Scrivenings, it shows the entire contents - it includes subfolder content too.
Best,
Keith

Great Keith! Wonderful! Thanks very much.

Glad that helped. Plus, given that the corkboard and outliner in 2.0 can show the contents of multiple folders if you select more than one folder in the binder, it’s on the list to support this for E.S., too (i.e. so that choosing two folders in the binder would show the contents for the subdocuments of both, rather than just the folder text), although I have yet to implement this (but I will be doing before 2.0 is out).

All the best,
Keith

Sounds good Keith. The more I explore Scrivener as I write, the more I find. From everything you say, I imagine there’ll be something of a learning curve when 2.0 comes out but I’m looking forward to it!!

All the best
