Ending italics at the end of a paragraph

I’m writing along and have some text that is italicized at the end of the paragraph, such as this.

Before hitting ENTER, I press CTRL-I to turn of italics (which works, according to the Format Bar), but as soon as I do press ENTER, the format bar (as well as anything I type) reveals italics have turned themselves back on!

Seems buggy.

I should have done some more research first. It turns out, even after I turn off italics before typing the next paragraph totally devoid of italics, when I press ENTER at the end of that paragraph, italics are back on AGAIN!

Weird. And now it’s not doing it.

It comes and goes, without warning, with no apparent reason.
