Epub3 compile windows-version -- need help fixing what's not working

I have the latest Windows version, and am having problems with the epub cover situation. I’ve tried a bunch of different things – some based on the manual (not helpful) and many based upon responses to your forum for the same problem.

First problem is that the compile to the copy of the epub3 format does not include the first image in the project, nor any of the options there. I’ve tried with both clicking on add html cover and without.

I can add the cover with Calibre but that doesn’t save because it spots other things wrong.

The stock image worked, but I replaced it with the desired one, but it doesn’t find it. I’m thinking it doesn’t like the format (jpg) of the image when it runs through the compile. I need to understand where, precisely, that cover image needs to reside: in the project (it is), saved as an image somewhere else? How do I make this work, please.

The image must be in the front matter folder as a separate image file. This folder must be outside the manuscript. As you need an seperate image file this forces the front matter folder to be in the research folder. I have used png images, but believe jpg should work.

That isn’t entirely the case, the image can be anywhere in the binder at all. All images will be presented in the dropdown menu in the Cover tab. The whole “first image in front matter” thing is just a convenience setting for templates so that people don’t need to figure out how to even get to the Cover tab to begin with.

But the image needs to be in the binder. You can’t make a text file and then drop and image into the text file, for example.
