Error message when saving project

I keep getting the following message, multiple times, even though I have saved the document with a new name. Getting the message in the new document. My Scrivener is up to date.

The following errors occurred while saving your project.
Could not save project document ‘[name of document]
Failed saving text for document with id: [file number]
Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

Is this windows or Mac. First thing look where your project folder is and where you are saving. (File > Show Project in File Explorer) and two File > Options > Backup check Backup Location

Windows, thanks. Project folder is in a Manuscript folder under Documents. Backup is in another folder called Scrivener Backup, also under Documents.

Would move the backups out of Documents, in theory are fine, but ideally not near each other. Does this effect every project or just one. Might consider using the internal logs and if no obvious answer sending it to Scrivener to analyze.

I don’t know if this will have a bearing, but Scrivener saves backups on a local machine to:
C:\Users{Username}\AppData\Local\LiteratureAndLatte\Scrivener

AppData (and in implementation anything that follows it) is, by default, a hidden folder in the Windows environment. You can unhide hidden folders in File Explorer from the View > Show menu.

Thanks, this is helpful. I’ll take a look.

Scrivener saves backups wherever you tell it to. The OP has obviously set it to a folder within Documents.

I never save backups to the same hardware as the project. Always a NAS or cloud so it the system irretrieveably goes down there is a recovery path.
