I made a titled snapshot of a document. Then I did a cut-and-paste within the document. I received the following error message:
Could not save project ‘xyzxyz’.
Failed saving text for project with id: 11
Error: Could not open RTF file for writing.
File: ‘…/xxxxx.scriv/Files/Docs/11.rtf’
Error: ‘The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.’
This error has come up at other times and has not seemed to cause any problems. Nevertheless, I am nervous. I have plenty of space on my hard drive, and I’m using Scrivener 1.7.2.0 on Windows 7.
The error indicates that another program is temporarily accessing the files in the Scrivener project. Usually we see this with a backup or security program that’s running while you’re working in Scrivener. Memeo Backup (WD AnyWhere), Mozy Backup, and WebRoot’s online sync have caused this in the past, but if you’re running anything of that sort, take a look at the preferences and see if you can exclude your Scrivener projects from the files it monitors. (Your Scrivener project backups are safe to have backed up again by any of this software; this is just for the active projects.)
As an aside, the current version of Scrivener is 1.8.6, so I recommend updating as well, though it’s unrelated to the saving issue. If you’re unable to update via Help > Check for Updates, you can download the installer from our website and just install over your existing version (when Scrivener is closed).
