Export Scrivener 3 novel to a *single* .docx

Greetings Fellow Scriveners.

After many moons writing in good old S2.9, I’ve just made the leap to S3. I’m now trying to export my novel , which is divided into 15 chapter folders – each of which contains 1 to 8 scenes. Here’s my question:

Is there a way to export my novel to a single .docx file which I can then import into Vellum?

So far, when I’ve used Scrivener’s export tool, it delivers the novel as multiple .docx files neatly inserted into folders and discrete files.

I appreciate any tips ‘n’ pointers that will get me there in one or two clicks.

Cheers, Don

Yes, it’s called “Compile”! Do the interactive Tutorial you find under the help menu and look it up in the manual!

Like Xiamenese writes, you shouldn’t export at all. Learn about the Compile function. That’s the way you create output from Scrivener, as docx, pdf, epub, mobi, etc.

And specifically for Vellum, you will want to do this:

  1. Use File ▸ Compile…
  2. Select “Microsoft Word (.docx)” from the Compile for dropdown at the very top.
  3. In the left sidebar, where you choose how the document will look, you’ll find a preset for “Vellum Export”.
  4. In the middle column, click the Assign Section Layouts… button, and set up the different parts of your draft to whichever templates you desire.

For Vellum, which is a stylesheet based program, you will have the best luck using styles to mark special text, rather than ad hoc formatting. The Vellum preset is designed to take those stock styles (like block quote) and convert them to styles it will understand natively.

Thanks everyone. You’ve been very helpful.

After toying with this for a few hours, I’ve broken through my frustration / inertia and mastered most of the basics in “Compile”. Looks like I’ll stick with Scrivener for generating all my publishing files. No need for Vellum!
