Is there a way to generate (as opposed to print) an outline with chapter headings and related synopses?

Use the Compile. Make sure that you’ve expanded it to see the full set of customizable options (click the disclosure button next to the “format as” dropdown menu if you don’t see a lot of choices) and then in the Formatting pane there check the columns for “title” and “synopsis” (and make sure the others are left unchecked). You can opt-click any box in the column to check or uncheck them all.
Also ensure that in the Content pane the documents aren’t set to “compile as-is.”
