Footnote Help, Please! Problems formatting footnote numbering for exporting/compiling as .rtf/.docx

Apologies in advance if this has been addressed before. I’ve encountered numerous complaints about footnote formatting, though most of them seem to apply to previous versions of Scrivener (not Scrivener 3, which I’m using).

Every time I’ve compiled my document and exported to Word–either as a .docx or .rtf–I’ve had problems formatting footnotes. The most persistent issue is numbering: my preference is the Word default (no period, and superscript for the numbering), but I can’t figure out how to format this in Scrivener, so the footnotes end up with full-sized numbering and a period. Based on a previous post (https://forum.literatureandlatte.com/t/footnote-numbers-font-size/17527/1), it seemed like there was an easy fix in previous versions of Scrivener: “Make sure that ‘Use period and space instead of superscript in markers’ is not ticked in the Footnotes/Comments pane of Compile.” However, I haven’t located this function in Scrivener 3 (or other options for formatting footnotes, other than the most basic choices for inclusion).

Thanks for any help with this!

Hi Re8ecca,

The footnote format settings you’re looking for can be found in the Format editor.

Choose File > Compile, and click on the Gear symbol under the list of Compile Formats on the left.

Choose Edit Format, and in the format editor you’ll see a page for Footnotes and Comments, with the setting you want.
