Dear All
Very near the end of my thesis now and need to change the format of the dates I have littered through the 100k words or so. My problem is that the size of the footnotes in the inspector panel is SO SMALL I cannot easily see anything written there, and am finding it hard to identify where I have dates. I have tried and failed to figure out a way to search the footnotes, and can’t seem to do that either.
Any help gratefully received. I have trawled the manual and not found it, most likely through my inadequate search, but I would be very grateful for your help.
I think this can be done by changing the font settings for inspector footnotes (or comments & footnotes) in the preferences. Then you view all your documents in Scrivenings mode, select the first footnote, then scroll to the end and SHIFT-click. Right-click on the selection, and choose the “Convert to Default Formatting”.
As Robert says, you can adjust the font for footnotes in the Formatting tab of Preferences. To keep the footnote formatting separate from the comments, check the box for using a different footnote font and then click in the field beside it to choose the font. Also make sure you check the second box to use this font for inspector footnotes (otherwise it only applies to inline footnotes).
Then load the full draft in a Scrivenings session, switch to viewing the comments and footnotes in the inspector and click into the inspector to focus it, then just use Cmd-A to select all the notes. Right-click and choose “Convert to Default Formatting” to apply your changes.
If you want the comments to change too, leave those boxes unchecked and just change the font in the “inspector comments” line. Both comments and footnotes will use that formatting then when you convert the inspector selection to default formatting.
Inspector footnote and comment text is included in “Text” when using the project search (the linked text will be highlighted in the document when you jump to each instance, indicating the relevant note). You can also use Edit > Find > Find by Formatting to search only in inspector comments and footnotes.
Thanks both of you - I can see that I will have to change it so I can read it on the screen to amend it, then change it all back again before I compile, or I will end up with monster size footnotes!
You’ve both been very helpful, much appreciated - thank you again.
Yes, do keep in mind that you can let the compiler change the fonts dramatically from what you see when you are editing your text. For that matter, you can change your font every other word in the editing phase, and have it come out in a uniform font & size, preserving only the bold & italics attributes (assuming you choose a font that has bold & italic in your compile settings).
There is no need to strain you eyes just because you have to print everything out in tiny fonts!
