"ForceTouch" support on Macs.

The new Macbook and the 13"rMBP come with “ForceTouch”, allowing a “force click” for additional features, such as defining the word you just clicked.
Since Scrivener already supports the standard Mac functionality for looking up the currently selected word, it would be nice to also support this new way of doing so.
Edit: Another functionality would for example be using the force click for editing a file’s name in the binder, instead of double-click

I have a new MacBook on order, so I’ll look at the possibilities. It looks like there are only certain controls that have support for force touch at the moment (mainly buttons), and I’m not sure using force touch to rename an item in the binder would be desired (in terms of what is common across OS X). I expect for APIs will be added, and coverage will be added to the Human Interface Guidelines, with the next version of OS X that will no doubt be announced at WWDC in June.

All the best,
Keith

I’ve been playing with Better Touch Tool recently. I’ll bet that the force-touch gesture will be added to their available gestures in a little while; you can assign any gesture to do just about anything, including activating a particular menu item when used with Scrivener in the foreground.

And it’s free, which is nice.

It’s very likely that it will work out of the box, since Scrivener doesn’t do anything special to get that default Ctrl-Cmd-D word look-up feature either. That’s just a function of the text engine, as I believe looking up words using The Force is, from my recollection of playing with the hardware in an Apple store the other week.

Agreed. As of right now, Scrivener doesn’t seem to support force click–I’ve been trying it on my new 13"rMBP. Hopefully, it will only take a new line of code or two to get this working for the next update (Please, L&L?).

Please see my reply above.

Thanks, KB–I’m new to the forums and didn’t notice that you’re an admin. I look forward to seeing this feature in the future!

Not only an admin, but I’m also the designer and sole developer of the Mac version, so I need to wait to get that new MacBook before I can see what’s possible and what’s available. There’s another four week wait before it’s due to be in stock, I believe. As I say, if APIs aren’t currently available, I expect they’ll be made so in the next update of OS X that will inevitably be announced at WWDC in June.

Oh, and welcome to the forums!

All the best,
Keith

Got the new MacBook yet? What do you think of it as a device to use Scrivener on?

No dispatch notification as of yet. :frowning: It’s not scheduled to arrive until between 22nd May and 4th June.

Why do I feel disappointed when it’s not even my Mac? Hope you’ll let us know your thoughts when it does arrive: especially as a machine to use with Scrivener.

I just got a replacement rMBP with force touch, and I love the new trackpad, and the force-click is great, would love to see this added to Scrivener soon, even if only to support “look up”. I haven’t thought if added binder functionality would be useful yet, or what other programs may use this for, but the APIs seem to offer some flexibility: developer.apple.com/osx/force-touch/

I would use force click to add strength and expressivity to a sentence.

Paolo

I would use it to order a double espresso.

KB: I support both requests. Make it so!

Great ideas, and all can be accomplished using modifier keys:

add strength to a sentence: Cmd-ForceClick
add expressivity to a sentence: Opt-ForceClick
order a double espresso: Ctrl-ForceClick

(Shift is still left…as are combinations Opt-Cmd &c… )

As speculated earlier, with BetterTouchTool you can now control force clicking (though it can’t override the system’s one finger clicks) system-wide. In its trackpad settings you’ll have more detailed control over the amount of force required to click regularly as well as force click. And then in the gesture editor you can create global or application specific actions to be taken when a force click is used, as well as how you do it (including an interesting two-finger option where you use more pressure on the left or right finger to do different things, Back/Forward?).

You can add a two-finger force click to trigger the system “Look up word under cursor” action. Or you can make it back up your project, it’s all up to you.

Just found this thread having moaned (a little bit) about lack of Force Touch support in Scrivener, but BetterTouch lets me do that now… and much, much more. Highlight recommend!
