Formatting a Table of Contents for PDF Output

Seeking guidance in generating a Table of Contents for PDF output. I have created a document in the binder, selected documents to include in the TOC and gone to "Edit > Copy Special> Copy Documents as TOC and formatted the text to my liking. Product after compiling is similar to the “Copy Documents as TOC” and does not resemble a published table of contents with page numbering.

Consider the items in the Binder that are meant to constitute the contents of your TOC. Here’s my understanding: In order for Scrivener to assign page numbers to these items at compile time, these items must result in some placed text – either the title of the Binder item or its textual contents must appear in the compiled output – and where that text appears will determine the page number generated.

  1. So, I wonder if the Binder items from whence your TOC comes do not actually place any text in the output. I can imagine a case where the items are TOC-suitably named chapter folders containing content docs, but the titles of the folders are not actually being used per se by the compile setting. This would result in questions marks (??) where you were expecting page numbers.

  2. Or maybe, for testing purposes, you are just compiling the TOC to see if it looks like you want – this won’t work either, since Scriv only fetches page numbers from what it is set to compile, so you have to compile the whole to get the complete TOC.
