My guess is that they were intending to unlock it all along. Mariner Write hasn’t been updated significantly in quite some time. It’s a $50 program that is going creaky with age and a bit of pancake makeup applied to its UI isn’t going to bring suitors to the door. But giving away a lot of free licenses for MW 3.9.0 provides a large pool of possible upgrades to MW 4.0 without having to reduce the software’s price.
