Having a helluva of a time trying to inser the page numbers!

I am writing using Scrivener 3.5.2 on a MacBook Pro. I am trying to insert page numbers to create a table of contents. But in all the instructions I find on how to do this, the user interface on my Scrivener does not offer the options or choices. For example, after I get to the ‘compile’ function and select ‘compile for print,’ I do not see any ‘Page Layout’ option. I cannot ‘Scroll down to ‘Page Numbering,? Nor can I ‘include page numbers’? I don’t understand where those functions are or how to get to them. I tried to include a screenshot to show what I am seeing, but I am currently not permitted. Please help. After I add the page number, I also need to add a table of contents.

I’ll update your trust settings to allow you to post a screenshot.

Probably you need to edit the Compile Format you’re using, which you can do by right-clicking and choosing the Edit (or Duplicate & Edit) option.

  1. What Compile format are you using? Even the Default (“as-is”) compile format already includes page numbering. So, it seems like this is not something you need to be even messing with.

  2. To make a TOC, there is a special Copy operation you apply to a Binder selection: Copy Documents as TOC. This scary-named command just puts TOC info on the clipboard, ready to Paste into a document you will put near the front of your project. It includes placeholder text for page numbers that will automatically be replaced with actual page numbers upon Compile.
