Having trouble finding old templates to add to updated scriviner

Hi
I wasn’t sure if this was the best place to ask this question so if I’m in the wrong place just let me know and I will move it.

I’m using the windows version of scrivener. Basically I read the Read me file for the updated version of scrivener and it has very clear rules of how to update templates from earlier versions.

Templates
Because the file format has changed, your old project templates will need updating. The path for project templates has also changed, so older project templates will no longer be found. To update old project templates:

  1. Go to File > New Project…
  2. In the New Project Binder assistant, click on the “Templates…” pop-up button and click on “Import Template(s)…”.
  3. Browse to ~/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Templates and select the templates you wish to import.
  4. Click on “Import”. They should now appear in the New Project Binder assistant.
  5. One by one, select a template, copy its description text, and create a new project from it.
  6. Choose to update the project when you are prompted to do so.
  7. Go to File > Save as Template…
  8. Enter the title of the template exactly as it was before.
  9. Paste the description text into the description text field.
  10. Click OK. (You can now delete the project you created in step 5.)
You can now safely delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Templates folder (project templates are now saved in a folder entitled “ProjectTemplates” rather than “Templates”, to differentiate them from other template types).
    (end quote)

I fallowed step one and two no problem but on step three I can not find any file labeled ~/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Templates. I have looked everywhere I can think of. I recently switched computers and used the updated version of scrivener on it instead of the old version. Could this be my problem? Do I need to plug in the old hard drive and look there?
Any advice would be super helpful.
Thank you.

The instructions you posted look like they’re from the Mac version – ~/Library/Applications Support/Scrivener is where all Scrivener customisations are held on a Mac.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know off-hand (and don’t have a system to check handy) where the corresponding files are kept on Windows, but they’ll be there somewhere. It may be worth starting to look in C:\Users\<YourAccount>\AppData\Local\Scrivener\

as that seems to be one location used by the program.

Thank you I will give that a look.

Do you know what the files might look like? I have no idea what to look for. I searched for .scrivtemplate files and came up empty.

My custom project templates–the ones I created for myself–are in

C:\Users<YourAccount>\AppData\Local\Scrivener\Scrivener\ProjectTemplates

It’s not clear to me what you’re looking for. Is it:

  1. the old Scrivener default project templates

Or

  1. old custom templates that you created or which someone provided to you

If #1, it doesn’t appear that the default project templates have the extension .scrivtemplate, as I’m not seeing them on my PC. I don’t know how to find them. But you probably don’t want them anyway, because you probably want #2.

#2 will be located on your old hard drive. As you are aware, the extension is .scrivtemplate

Just to confirm what JimRac said.

I read Jim’s reply and checked my Windows laptop. All the templates I have downloaded from other sites (Murder Mystery Novel template and so on) are in exactly the same location as Jim’s. You need to find those on your old computer / hard drive and copy them into the same place on your new computer.

Cheers
Owen

It appears that template files have the normal scriv or scrivx folder extensions.
