Help! Downloaded update now Scrivener won't load

Having problems to after upgrade it keeps freezing and saying not responding at the top, and that’s when I can even get scrivener to open. Update is horrible!

Thank you so much for sharing what Jeff told you, Tricia. I’ve done this and now Scrivener works.

I read several of these posts across the forum over the last few days since the update rolled out. But I am yet to see a single reply from the twelve moderators or techs.

I used to trust Scrivener updates and installed them straightaway. But now, having experienced similar problems in the past, I hold back. Time should be taken by the developer to iron these glitches out before updates are released. I have my own work to do, deadlines to meet, and don’t have time to be a beta-tester for software developers. I guess many out there are the same.

Yes - I do think there should have been more public response to these problems…was glad to get the tech support reply though and glad that’s helped others.

Thanks for the info!!

I tried doing this but sadly, it hasn’t worked for me. Still not opening :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

EDIT: I opened it via troubleshooter etc but when I try to TEST, it doesn’t open. It prompts me to give permission to make changes which I say YES to and then that’s it…nada.

As with others, I have downloaded and installed the update when prompted today. When I try to open it, it shows in my background processes in Task Manager, but will not open. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. I have also tried running the compatibility tool without success. Nothing I do will make it open.

When I tried opening Scrivener from the book’s file (as I often do), I get the following error message:

Things I have tried:

  • Rebooting my computer.
  • Installing from Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and the Microsoft Edge browsers in case the browsers were somehow corrupting the install file. (I uninstalled between each installation, just to be sure.)
  • Ran the compatibility tool several times, each with different settings, including the recommended settings.
  • Tried running the program as administrator.

Thankfully, I have a copy of the install executable for Scrivener v1.9.0.0 for Windows. If anyone needs it, you can download it here:

http://elhrodin.com/Scrivener-installer.exe

I hope this helps until this gets fixed.

The canonical source is our site, here:
literatureandlatte.com/scriv … taller.exe

For future reference, the immediately previous version of Scrivener is generally available via the Release Notes page for the platform of interest.

HOWEVER, please note that version 1.9 does NOT support syncing with Scrivener for iOS, if that matters to you.

But 1.9. does not start either :frowning:
I uninstalled 1.9.5. and installed 1.9 - nothing happens.

Where can I find the version before 1.9?

You’ve saved the day! For now ha ha. I can finally start working again. Thanks!

Best solution for now is this - reinstall 1.9.0.0. That is the measure I took and now I’m back in the comfort zone. However, the first measure to take is always have a System Image backup. For some reason I forgot that I had the image to take me back to 1.9.0.0. If I would have remembered that I would have used it. Forgetful me!!! Anyway, use the below link while it is still available.

Here is the L&L link:

Yes, having the last version available is a real lifesaver. What I can’t understand is how an update that radically defective got out the door in the first place. Sure, I’ve had program updates with problems before, but seldom so bad that the program wouldn’t open in the same operating system where the previous version was running perfectly well.

From now on, I’m not going to just automatically download the next version, as I have in the past.

Hi,

it doesn´t work for me too on windows 8. I did the following: I installed the version 1.9 copied the .exe file to an other folder, installed 1.9.5.0, which doesn´t work, and replaced the .exe file with the old one. As version number it shows me version 1.9, but when I click the on the manual, it says 1.9.5.0, so at the end I don´t know which version I have, but it works well so far.
I hope the fix will come soon.

The ‘About’ command in the application itself is the canonical indication of the version number. The manual is a separate document; copying the old executable into the new folder, as you did, pretty much guarantees that the manual version won’t match the executable version.

I spend most of my time on the Mac side of things, so I’m afraid I don’t have much information about the status of the Windows 1.9.5 version.

Note, however, that Win Scriv 1.9 is NOT compatible with iOS Scrivener. If that matters to you, I’d suggest contacting the Windows support team about issues with 1.9.5, rather than merely reverting to the previous version.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply on this thread, but we cannot reproduce this problem i.e. Scrivener not starting up. We only assume that it might be due to automatic conversion of the last open project upon startup. We would be very interested to receive some of your projects that Scrivener fails to load. If someone is ready to do so, please contact “windows.support at literatureandlatte.com” with the project that you think Scrivener fails to load and does not start.

To remove the last loaded project and force Scrivener to start clean(without loading the last available project), and you are brave enough to open the Registry Editor try the following:

  1. Close Scrivener
  2. Open the Registry Editor via running regedit.exe
  3. Delete the following registry keys:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Scrivener\Scrivener\LastClosedProjects
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Scrivener\Scrivener\Recent
  4. Run Scrivener again
  5. Report the result after running Scrivener again.

Thanks, and looking forward for your feedback.

Hi,

I did what you wrote, but it changed nothing.

I did this, also thinking this may be the problem at the beginning, once it opened I changed it to not auto-load. Future attempts didn’t load.

Deleting the registry entries did nothing. And… do you really want me to send you every one of my projects? Because none of them will open the program. I tried them all.

Thank You, guys. Sorry the last project registry trick did not help.

Can you please verify that you have no antivirus app running when you test starting Scrivener. Can you please also try running Windows in Safe Mode and run Scrivener in Safe Mode.

From the initial post and the comments, I got the impression that Scrivener v1.9.5.0 never starts. From the last few posts I get the impression that it starts, but fails to load some or all projects, but at least you get some Scrivener windows to interact with. Can you please confirm, that some of you get Scrivener windows(like the New Project Wizard), but fail to load any project?

If you ever get the “New Project Wizard”, are you being able to create new Blank, new Tutorial, or any kind of project?

Thanks for the help, guys.

My problem is, that scrivener doesen´t open at all. Nothing happens when i click on the .exe
I tried to run scrivener in windows safe mode, but it doesn´t run.

Thanks Itman! Can you please try running Scrivener from command line with a “–log” argument. (i.e. run cmd, navigate to the Scrivener installation directory, and run “Scrivener.exe --log”). This should create a file %Scrivener_Instalation_Folder%/log/Scrivener-YYYYMMMDD-XXXXXX.log. If you attach the file to this thread, or send us the log file, hopefully we should see something useful within to trace this further.
