I’ve been writing a novel using Scrivener for Windows for over 3 years. Last night, I purchased the iOS version for use on my IPad mini. I have two main questions:
Is there a way for me to open Windows created files on the iOS version? Basically, are these files compatible?
(Note, I already backup my Scrivener/Windows files to Dropbox)
When I first opened the iOS version, I synced it to Dropbox/Apps/Scrivener. However, it only allows me to open newly created projects in iOS. I purchased this app with the intent to use/edit the existing Windows project on the IPad. I moved/copied my most recent Windows file into the Dropbox/Apps/Scrivener folder and synced on the IPad, but the Windows file still doesn’t show up to open.
I also purchased the iOS app to work with existing Windows projects. The difference between the ways we appear to work, however, is that I save all my work directly into Dropbox, and don’t just back my work up there.
To get the iOS app to see your original project you need to copy or move the folder containing the originakl files into the apps/Scrivener folder in Dropbox. Then the iOS app should see it.
IMO if you are going to work using both iOS and Windows then you will be best off reversing what I think is your current strategy. You should save your work into the Dropbox folder and save your back-ups locally (or onto removable drives or whatever). That way the syncing will happen automatically.
The other piece of symcing advice: close Scrivener two or three minutes before you close you Windows computer to make absolutely certain that Dropbox has synced your latest work to its servers. At the iOS end always sync Scrivener before closing it. This will avoid conflicts between the versions.
I want to thank you both, Owen and Lunk, for taking the time to respond. After playing around with it some more, I finally figured it out and it now works perfectly. Not sure I can explain how if asked, lol.
This is a dream come true. I work long hours and do all of my writing on the PC at home. I can now work from my IPad during downtime at work or on my lunch break. Thank you staff at L&L for creating these wonderful programs!
