Help importing Word document

I have a completed manuscript written in Word. Each chapter is separated by section breaks. When I import the document, it shows up as one continuous work. How do I import and break it up by chapter? Do I have to copy and paste each chapter separately? When I import and it says, “Split into sections by finding separators in the text,” how do I identify section/page breaks?

Perhaps best, rather than re-stating all this here, re-read Chapter 9 of the Scrivener Manual, and in particular see section 9.1.6 which explains splitting imported files. Ask again if what’s already there to read is not helping.

Thank you for responding. I did go a little deeper into the manual, but it still did not determine how to indicate a split at a section break, which is only indicated when Show/Hide is on. A section break is not written into the document. However, I have found a way to do it by adding the word “Chapter” at the beginning of each chapter. I can make it work.

If you used “proper” Heading 1, Heading 2 styled text for your major breaks, you can also use the option to import the file by its internal outline. That will not only break things up by section, but create a nested list if you are writing non-fiction or something that would have sub-headings within chapters (or parts and chapters).

It doesn’t recognise section breaks, or page breaks. That’s probably not a bad idea to add to this dialogue at some point.

Thanks for clarifying, AmberV. I figured out the workaround. I know what to do going forward if I don’t write in Scrivener.
