Highlight a word and then open a page in Quick Reference?

When you right-click in the Binder and go down to Open, it allows you to open that file in either the main editor or Quick Reference. But if you highlight a word, it allows you to open any file that contains that word in the title, but only in the main editor. So if you need to check something, you back to do so, and then go back to your original page.

Is there any way to make it so that you can highlight a word and open the relevant file in Quick Reference instead?

I’m assuming you’re selecting text in the editor that’s offering a suggested document at the top of the context menu, the “linking without linking” described in the user manual. That method will only open the document in the main editor, but you could use the Quick Search for what you want:

  1. Select the word/phrase and copy it (or just type it directly in step 3)
  2. Focus in the Quick Search menu in the tool bar, either by clicking into it or using the shortcut ( Win+Ctrl+G by default, customizable in the Keyboard tab of File â–¸ Options)
The Quick Search bar is a multi-function area, showing the title of the editor document normally and the word count when you hover over it; clicking into it will give you the search field.
  3. Paste your selection and press Return or click the magnifying glass
  4. Shift+click or Shift+Return on the result you want to open in a Quick Reference

Using the shortcuts to navigate this, you can still get quick results, with the benefit also that Scrivener’s running a more robust search than the title scanning that comes with the context menu option, which may not always offer the document you want.
