Highlights pdf reader replacement

I’ve relied for a long time on Highlights for pdf to read/annotate/take notes for my non-fiction projects. My use fell off for a while as I had a long stretch of just writing up my work in a number of ways, but I’m now entering another more intensive reading/annotating etc phase and was wondering if I can now do better. Such software seems to have moved on a lot in the interim.

Any suggestions?

This is for Mac.

Thanks, A.

I revise and annotate using a number of apps and a range of devices. My phone, a tablet, a Windows tablet, a laptop and finally a travel mini-laptop.

To ensure compatibility what I went for is that I annotate inline, and use a dedicated symbol/character. That makes it constant accross devices etc, and back in Scrivener they are easilly identifiable and I can search for them efficiently and fix their in-project formatting. (Take them from inline to real annotation or else.)

Something like :
Text text text ∆<perhaps this bit is too much and should be removed∆ text text text.

If you are happy with Highlights, why not continue to use it?

I use Marginnote 4 and PDF Expert on Mac and PDF X-Change PRO on Windows. None are subscription based (you can opt in for subscription with PDF Expert if you want).

I don’t think basic PDF readers’ and editors’ core functionality have moved on that much, the biggest is that most of them offer “AI” integration if you are willing to pay.

Thanks - I’ll do that as I have no interest in AI.
