How can I number sub-chapters?

I am trying to number my sub-chapters like this:

Chapter I
Sub-chapter 1
Sub-chapter 2
Etc
Chapter II
Sub-chapter 1 (NUMBER RE-START FROM 1)
Sub-chapter 2
Etc

I added <$n> to Compile > Formatting > Section Layout but the sub-chapter number doesn’t re-start at the beginning of each chapter. Basically, I got this:

Chapter I
Sub-chapter 1
Sub-chapter 2
Etc
Chapter II
Sub-chapter 9
Sub-chapter 10
Etc

How can I re-start the numbering?

In the Help/Placeholder Tag List… menu command, search for “Restart” for help on resetting numbering streams. With compile settings like these, you could enter the reset placeholder into the chapter title suffix, since that is when you would want subdocument numbering to restart.

To use sub-chapters I see two options. If your document is like a novel and has multiple scenes per chapter then you could play with the template for a “novel with parts”. Treat each part as a chapter and the next level down as sub-chapters. You might be better off using something like the “hierarchal nonfiction” template and <$hn> to get the numbering that you want. With this, you would have to make everything you want to appear in the sub-chapter in the same document.

Hi David

what’s the difference between<$n> and your <$hn> from your message?

<$n> is the placeholder for chapter numbers like 1,2,3 usually used for top level folder.

<$hn> is the heiarchal placholder. It is usually used to number all binder entires like 1.2.3, 1.2.4 etc. by how they are nested in the binder.
