How do I add a cover image

How do I add a cover image? I tried to add an image in the front matter folder and when I compile it, the image still doesn’t show.

Did you drop the image into the body of an (empty) text file or is the image just a standalone file in the binder? Perhaps you did the latter, but compile for front matter needs the other — for the same reason images are not compilable unless embedded into a text doc item. [[EDIT: This turns out to be only half true.]]

P.S Weirdly, searching for ‘front matter’ in the manual just gives me two or three minor mentions and no hit giving a useful explanation of the whole business.

What format are you compiling to?

For ebooks, there’s a separate Cover tab in the Compile settings. See Section 23.4.5 in the manual.

EPUB. I will try to create a folder called ‘cover’ and add a text file in it. After that, i will add an image in the text file. From what I understand, it should work, right?

You don’t need the cover folder. Put the image in Research and put <$img:imageName> in an empty file in Front Matter. This is for print, pdf, and docx. For ebooks, add the cover in compile and don’t compile the image otherwise.

The cover should be an image, not a text file.

For an actual cover page, one that would be inserted dynamically by the book reader in most cases, and one that would be used by its thumbnail in most catalogue views, you should use the Cover tab in the compile overview screen, on the right side.

If you really want an HTML page with an image on it as well (as some readers do not do all of the above), there is a checkbox for that below the image selection interface. But do note that in some readers that will result in two cover pages if the reader flips through everything.

You can also put the image at the top of the Front Matter folder. It won’t show up in the Contents tab, but if you examine the Cover tab you should find it designated, as by default its setting is for “First Image in Front Matter Folder”.

I too am curious how to do all types of cover pages with Scrivener for all formats. Is there a YouTube video showing how?
