How do I compile an RTF draft with page numbers?

I can compile the draft but can’t get the page numbers to appear.

Enter <$p> into the header/footer field - that is the variable for page numbers. And make sure you open the resultant RTF file in a program that supports headers and footers (such as Word or Nisus - Pages and TextEdit don’t support RTF headers and footers).
