A few things.
When you open the Fonts Window (Cmd T) make sure to click on the lower right corner of the window and drag it to the right. This will EXPAND the window and allow all of the columns to be seen. (Should be 4 columns. COLLECTION FAMILY TYPEFACE SIZE
Many times this window is “shrunk” and not all of the four columns are showing which can cause confusion so expand the window)
Collection is when you make a group of fonts or “collection”
To make an easy analogy I will use iTUNES
Collections are like PLAYLISTS.
Family is like ALBUM
Typeface is like SONG
Size is like Format (mp3 or ACC for example)
You can make a new collection then drag certain fonts into that collection. Then if you click on collection it is like clicking on a playlist in iTunes and ONLY the fonts you put in that collection will be shown in the columns to the right. This “filters” out unwanted fonts making font selection easier.
Family is like ALBUM. Example the Font Family TIMES will usually contain four fonts or TYPEFACES)
TIMES
TIMES BOLD
TIMES ITALIC
TIMES BOLD ITALIC
So if you open your font screen and the font window appears on the left hand column is the “Collecitons” or filters. Click on ALL FONTS and the columns to the right will populate with every font on your computer. Then go to the next column FAMILY and scroll down and click on TIMES. now the column to the right (Typefaces) will populate with only those typefaces or fonts that are in that family. (Like the list shown above). Then select TIMES BOLD.
The final column is the SIZE of the font which is usually from 8-12 point in most writing cases depending on how big or small you want that individual font or typeface to appear.
Now what you should see from left to right is under COLLECTIONS the ALL FONTS should be highlighted. In the next column FAMILY the family TIMES should be highlighted, then in the third column TYPEFACE the TIMES BOLD should be highlighted.
That is how you can check fonts or change fonts to your desire by checking what is highlighted. Always remember to click ALL FONTS if nothing appears because a “collection” is like a filter and if that font is not in that collection NOTHING will appear.
Now if you are using a template (Like Novel Template) then many of its formating like FONTS (Typeface) and SIZE are already chosen as is the layout (left, center, right, justify) and line spacing.
Adjust your template page and in the future each page you generate from that template page you use will have all of the font and formatting preset.
if that makes any sense?
