On a Mac, is there a way to change some setting so that both the shortcut ⌘i and clicking the I (italics) button in the format bar apply the character style “Emphasis”? As things are now, though they visually do the same thing—italicize the text—they seem to be functionally different (treated differently by Scrivener). I want them all to be treated the same, as a style.
I know character styles such as “Emphasis” can be given a shortcut, so theoretically I could just ignore the italics button in favor of solely using that. But the options for style shortcuts are limited to ⌥⌘ + a number 1–9, and I’ve already assigned most of those to other styles. Plus I’m in the decades-long and subconscious/automatic habit of using ⌘i for italics, which will be a tough habit to break.
I love that I can search for instances where certain styles are used. If I use the Emphasis character style, it’ll let me see at a glance anywhere I’ve used it to emphasize a word, jump between various instances of inner monologue, etc. It’s super convenient!
But I can’t seem to do that with regular italics, whether applied with the italics button or the shortcut ⌘i. Even the “find” feature doesn’t offer a way to search for words of this or that formatting.
In short: I don’t understand why Emphasis and italics aren’t already treated the same by Scrivener in the first place. But regardless of that, I’d really like to customize my settings so that they are! (So that ⌘i applies Emphasis) I’ve tried looking through the Scrivener manual and Googling for suggestions, but I haven’t had luck.
Can anyone help me with this please? Thank you!
