How do you add names to the name generator?

Hello!

I was happily surprised to find that Scrivener has a name generator and saw that it was possible to add to the names in the database. I was just wondering how exactly I could do this, as there are some names I would like to add.

Any help on this would be appreciated!

I have not done this personally, but it looks like a self-generated .csv file of names is all you need.

ā€¦from HELP file:

20.3.1 Managing Your Own Name Lists: You can add your own custom name lists to the generator. They should be formatted so that all names are on a single line, and each name is separated by a comma, like so:
name1,name2,name3,name4,name5,ā€¦

  1. It might be easiest to produce these lists in a spreadsheet on a single row, and export as a csv ļ¬le. If you use a regular text editor, make sure to name the ļ¬le with a ā€œ.csvā€ extension.

  2. Clickthe + button, below the name list area of the Name Generator window.

  3. Locate the ļ¬le in the chooser dialogue and click Open.

  4. Give the list a descriptive name in the Title ļ¬eld, and select whether it is a list of female names, male names, or surnames.

  5. Finally, if you have ordered your list from most common to most obscure (at the end of the list), check this box to enable the Obscurity Level slider for that list.4

To delete one of your custom lists: select it from the name list area and click the āˆ’ button. You will be asked to conļ¬rm your decision. To update a list youā€™ve imported in the past, delete the custom list, and then add your
modiļ¬ed csv ļ¬le again. The details from the last name list you created will be ļ¬lled in for you.

Thank you so much!!! It worked!

This morning I decided to create a project for one of my alternate history projects (a pan-European) story and found myself needing the name generator, but I found out there are no lists for Russian, Serbian or Lithuanian names.

How do you even create a list for the generator?

Any help is appreciated.

Look at legacy names in scrivener. These are included in software.
Now open notepad and place names on one line like below
Name1,
Name2,
Name3,
And last name without a comma
Save the list and import into the name generator. Will have to import again on 2nd computer.

The full procedure is documented in Ā§20.4.1, Managing Your Own Name Lists, of the user manual PDF. You can order the names by obscurity, optionally, and there is an option for indicating it has been ordered that way, in the import dialogue.

Thank you! Iā€™ll check that out.

Ask ChatGPT for 20 names, then 20 surnames. Then do the same with Gemini. Check what name people use to refer to one another in those countries, for instance a Black South African would celebrates being referred to by their surname, whereas a White, Couloured or Indian would find it an insult, especially if the person addressing them is their junior.
The LLMs are pretty lousy with counting, but pop back sufficient accurate names.
Iā€™ve delved down into sub-sects and cultures and found some interesting names and their origins that way.
All my charactersā€™ names have meaningā€“I build it into their identity.
Also consider your audience and try to keep names simple. Few readers are interested in long multi-syllable names. Why call someone Moegmad Padayachee, when Zaid Sadr would do?

I donā€™t see the list in my Scrivener. Using Windows, BTW.

Open the name generator and click the plus sign at the bottom which will show legacy list option. When click this, it opens the folder with the legacy lists and you pick one or more to import into the name generator. (look at number 6)

For the PC these Legacy lists are found in C:\Program Files\Scrivener3\resources\toolbox\namestool\legacy

Thank you! Iā€™ll test this out.

This legacy list is only with the Windows version? I donā€™t see it in Mac.
