How to compile novel

I used Scrivener 3.1.5.1 for Windows to write a 112K novel broken into 67 chapters.

  1. Each chapter starts with a chapter title using the style ‘Chapter Title’ (I didn’t include chapter numbers, since I understood Scrivener could add those)
  2. Below each chapter title is the name of the point of view character for that chapter using the style ‘PointOfView’
  3. Below that are the actual scenes using style ‘Style1’, which occasional include emphasized words within the body of the text using style "Stlye1 + Emphasis’

I would like to compile this in both Print Format and PDF Format to share with beta readers, but not sure how to proceed. I’ve gone through the Scrivener tutorials for compiling but didn’t see any mention about how to trigger chapter creation (and numbering) based on styles.

The 67 ‘chapters’ that appear on the left side in the Binder are simply text files (rather than folders) so their section type is ‘Scene’ rather than ‘Chapter’ when I look in the Outline view.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Numbering and formatting of Chapter titles are not based on Styles, but on Section Layouts, coupled with Section Types. Check the compiling chapters in the Interactive Tutorial from the Help menu, and the Placeholders PDF from the Help menu for details on formatting and autonumbering respectively.

I remember finding a discussion about the pluses and minuses of creating individual folders for every chapter versus just using separate files, but my impression from reading those over a year ago was that you would be able to successfully compile a manuscript whichever route you chose (otherwise the method that failed wouldn’t be much of an option).

Right now my manuscript looks just how I want it in Scrivener 3, and I’m looking for options on how to get it out intact (in print, .pdf, and .docx format)

Created a duplicate of Manuscript Times for PDF format, and have been able to get things very close to what I need. Only remaining problem is I keep getting a # on an empty line between my Chpater number and my Chapter Title. I’ve tried changing the separator to Blank Line or Break to supress the hashtag, but keeps showing up.

Any ideas on how to remove that?

When your Title and your Numbering as both set in the Title Options of the Section Layout, there must be a rogue hashtag in the prefix or Suffix textboxes.
Alternatively, check Separators for all Section Layouts in the Compile Format Designer for a Custom Separator with a hashtag.

I did eventually track down a hashtag, and I think it was by looking through the different section layouts in the compile format designer.

The only thing I’m still trying to figure out is how to have my Table of Contents have both the Chapter number and the Chapter name - I found a thread somewhere that mentioned unchecking the box in Document Title Links that says ‘Update titles in document links with prefix and suffix settings’, which does let me see the actual chapter names. But I would like to add back the chapter numbers as well.

When the Title checkbox in the Section Layout is checked, the Compiler will add the Title for you. To add a numbering, add an Autonumbering Placeholder to the Prefix or Suffix textboxes of the Title Options. Then make sure those are used in the Document Title Links menu.

I couldn’t get that to work., but I can manually paste "Chapter <$n>: "
to the beginning of each line in my Table of Contents to get the desired effect.
I’d like to understand this part of the Compile Process better for the future, but at least for now, this will let me continue on.
Have pulled up the Compile chapter in the manual and will go through that now that I kind of have a sense of how things are supposed to work and what I’m struggling with.

Thanks for your help.
